Kylie Stephens re-launches Piano Bar at the Wentworth Hotel

Kylie Stephens is a talented pianist, singer and entertainer with a fantastic 20 years of experience. Her most loved spotlight shone at The Menzies as their resident piano vocalist. Now her new chapter begins as she brings back the historic Piano Bar at Sofitel Sydney Wentworth.

How would you define your style of music?

I would describe my style as extremely varied.  I play over 500 songs from Classic Hits to rock and pop songs to ballads and standards (1940’s to today’s hits).  I mostly play songs that people like to sing along to or songs that bring back great memories, I play their favourites.

Have you always wanted to be a musician?

Yes…When I was a little girl my parents bought me a tiny keyboard and I used to play songs on it ‘by ear’. I learnt classical piano through high school, but it wasn’t until I started improvising with chords and singing, that I developed a desire to want to perform

What is your favourite and most popular song?

This is the question I am asked the most and the hardest question to answer.  It’s like trying to choose your favourite child.  You like different songs for different reasons at different stages in your life.  I could say I love ‘story songs’ or songs that take you on a journey for example “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant” – Billy Joel…but I also love beautiful songs like “Over The Rainbow” and songs that make me cry… “From Both Sides Now”.

Who is your greatest musical inspiration and why?

There are four that spring to mind.  Billy Joel and Carole King are my top two.  They have an amazing ability to have churned out hit after hit, composing the songs singlehanded, playing and singing – the triple threat.  Also Sarah McLachlan is a brilliant musician and has awe-inspiring talent and Adele of course with her phenomenal voice and I admire her down-to-earthness and wonderful sense of humour. She is such a wonderful role model for young women.

What do you love most about your job?

Making people smile and bringing people together through music.  There is nothing better than seeing people being happy and everyone singing and dancing together – you can feel the love in the room and to think that I have been a part of that, is a great feeling….  I feel I have the best job in the world because I get to do what I love.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

I have been a pianist/singer/entertainer for over 20 years and the highlight was my final night at The Menzies Piano Bar when I played to over 300 people – my Menzies Fan Club.   All of the ‘regulars’ had become my piano bar friends like a second family to me where they were always supporting me and singing along.  They all came together on my final night to wish me well – we raised the roof!!

Join Kylie every Friday and Saturday from 8pm until late for an evening of wonderful entertainment at Sofitel Piano Bar.
